COACHES TIME OUT

Living & Leading In Crisis

Oct 24th | 1:00 - 4:30PM

Session #1 - Crisis

Session #1 - Crisis

Clinging to the reality that Jesus does His greatest work in the darkest times, how can we flip the script on 2020 and see how God can use the chaos and challenges of 2020 to actually advance God’s work in us and through us?

Doug Schillinger has had the amazing privilege of making disciples in the Iowa City area for 25 years as a youth pastor, basketball and baseball coach, and lead pastor. Doug loves to inspire people to experience life transformation through a relationship with Jesus, and has a passion to teach the Bible and live life in a way that Jesus is magnified and anyone can jump in and follow Him. He has led men’s groups for many years and has also had the privilege of leading teams in the countries of Russia, Ukraine, India, South Sudan, and Ethiopia. In each ministry environment, Doug has also had a strong passion for reaching across local ethnic boundaries, bridging local churches to minority communities in their local area. Doug is a graduate of the University of Iowa (B.S. in General Science/Chemistry) and Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.).

Session #2 - Identity

Session #2 - Identity

We live in a culture where we value creating an identity for ourselves. It’s no wonder the despair, discouragement and depression that bubbles up when we don’t measure up to our or other’s expectation. Despite our continued attempts, our true identity cannot be achieved, it can only be received. We need to remember and remind ourselves of the identity we have and the destruction that will inevitably come when we veer off course.

Originally from the Midwest, Jay Haugh started his college career at Purdue University, but transferred to St. Cloud State University after meeting his future wife, Jen, at Newport Beach, California, on a CRU summer mission project. In 2003 Jay and Jen graduated, tied the knot, and immediately moved to Denton, Texas, where Jay was accepted to do a discipleship program with Pastor Tommy Nelson. The following year Jay and Jen joined CRU staff and moved to Puebla, Mexico, for a year-long mission trip. Upon completion, they returned to Texas, where Jay began his first full-time ministry position and seminary at Dallas Theological Seminary. Jay also served in various pastoral positions in Texas, California, Minnesota, and Washington that helped prepare him to be the next Lead Pastor at New Covenant Bible Church. Jay loves food and sports. He’s always up for competition in ping pong, pickleball, or any other game that’s borderline useless. He also enjoys birding with his wife, Jen, and watching the old reruns of Survivor with his two children Ben (2008) and Abi (2009).

Session #3 - Mission

Session #3 - Mission

What are you passionate about? Has your passion wavered or changed in the midst of these trying times? Passion only goes so far as it is connected to a purpose. Together, let’s remember what our purpose is. Let’s refocus on why we do what we do. When our why is clear, our passion and our purpose impacts our spheres of influence.

Breakout Session - Marriage

Breakout Session - Marriage

Is your marriage carrying the weight of crisis? Whether crisis is in the home or outside the home it impacts marriages. Doug and Laurie are excited to share that God has a plan for your marriage regardless. Specifically, there are three areas that will be discussed during this session. First, we will look at time management and how to prioritize your marriage in a world that is so busy. Second, we will discuss communication and the importance of being on the same page with your spouse. Third, we will discuss how to deal with conflict in marriage. Let’s learn to fight for our marriages. They are worth it!

Doug and Laurie Schillinger are huge fans of marriage! Laurie is a teacher and an avid runner and is Doug’s wife/best friend/teammate of 26 years. Doug and Laurie, have had the privilege of raising college aged daughters Hannah and Bethany and a son, Caleb, who is a senior at Liberty High School. The Schillinger family loves hiking, traveling, and all kinds of games (but we can get a little too competitive). Together, God has allowed them to lead many marriage conferences and counsel several couples over the years.

Everyone struggles with different aspects of mental health. Come join us as we discuss what it means to be a “Whole Person” (body, mind, spirit). Individually we will assess how we are doing and then practically we will consider the appropriate next steps. Let’s pursue true mental health together.

Breakout Session - I can't fix it!

Breakout Session - I can't fix it!

Do you have an area in your life that you can’t fix, and God hasn’t fixed it yet? Join Sandra Waring to discuss how to process the various trials in our lives. We will look at the implications on our lives when we try to fix things by our own strength, and we will discover the freedom that’s possible when we trust God through the difficulties.

Sandra Waring has served on the Eastern Iowa FCA Board of Directors for the past seven years, was involved in the start-up of the North Linn FCA Huddle and has been a part of the FCA Banquet Committee. Over the years she has enjoyed coaching softball and basketball. Earlier in her professional career she was an IT manager, but when children arrived she chose to be a stay-at-home mom while working with her husband in their farming operation. Her passion is serving the Lord and sharing the love of Christ, especially with youth and women, which she has done through various ministries. Sandra has been married to her husband, Mark for 36 years, has four grown children, one lovely daughter-in-law and four precious grandchildren.
